Visit and feed the cutest Alpacas.
Come say hello to the cutest animals on the planet (at least for me). At the Alpaca Loom in Paarl you’ll be able to greet a herd of over 300 of these cuties and you and your kids won’t be disappointed. They have a lovely shop and coffee shop from where you can enter the petting zoo or start an Alpaca Tour to learn more about these amazing animals.
At the Coffee Shop you can enjoy some tea and coffee and yummy, decadent cakes. Check out their Alpaca Cupcakes. They are just too cute. From there you can also enjoy the stunning view of the Alpaca Herd, the Dromedaries and Table Mountain in the background. Grab some food for the Alpacas (R20 for a cup of Alpaca feed) and other animals and then get hands on with them. But be careful to hide the bags behind your back, otherwise the Alpacas will be ruthless and quickly steel it from you. For those kids with some extra energy, they also have a jungle gym.
If you want to experience the animals even closer and learn more about them, you can also take a tour. Alpaca Barn Tours are taking place daily every hour on the hour. You can just arrive and join them, there is no need for a booking. The tour takes approx. 45 – 60 minutes. Cost is R100 for adults and R70 for children, kids under 3 are free. This does include entry into the petting zoo as well.
But there is even more! Why not take an Alpaca on a walk? The Alpaca Walk is a guided walk accompanied by their woolly alpaca friends. After a short introduction you explore the farm and surroundings while leading an alpaca on a halter. This is fun for young and old and can be done daily at 10:00 and 16:00 (subject to availability) or by appointment. The duration is 45 – 60 minutes and costs R150 per person, with a minimum of 2 people.
Our Experience
Our kids love to feed the Alpacas, run around with the chickens and enjoy a delicious milkshake on a hot day. The highlight for them was the cute Alpaca Cupcake which not only looks hilarious, but also tastes delicious. The jungle gym is not shaded, so they never really played for very long there as it gets too hot very quickly. But other than that, we always love to go there when we’re in Paarl. In the shop you can also grab something made from 100% Alpaca Wool which is always nice as a gift or as a treat for yourself.
