History of Canettevallei

Canettevallei is one of the oldest farms in the Stellenboschkloof valley (dating back to 1682) and combines rich winemaking heritage with a passion for lavender cultivation. Owner Ingrid de Waal planted three hectares of hybrid Lavandin Abrialis in 2005, now tended organically to yield fragrant fields and handmade products. The charming boutique shop stocks lavender essential oils, dried blooms, handmade soaps (including patchouli and rose-scented black soap), honey, and even lavender-infused shortbread.

The estate also produces boutique wines under the Pella and Mount Sutherland labels, focusing on quality over quantity. The restored winery blends historic charm with contemporary sophistication, while visitors can enjoy tastings overlooking the vineyard and dam.

Lavender Picking Experience: Pick Your Own Lavender

Lavender blooms from June through September/October (winter in South Africa). During that season, you can visit the farm from Monday to Saturday (10am to 3pm) and pick your own lavender bouquet for R60. All tools are included and it’s a mood-lifting, grounding experience for young and old. After a short instruction, you can stroll around the lavender field, take cute pictures and create your perfect hand-picked bouquet.

Wine Tasting Experience & Coffee Shop

Before or after the lavender picking, you are invited to stay on the farm and have a cup of coffee or hot chocolate from the little coffee shop or do a lovely wine tasting in their tasting room. You get to taste 6 different wines (2 white and 4 red) for R100 per person.
