Clay Cafe / Hout Bay

Something for the creative mind.

Enhance the creativity of your children by visiting the amazing Clay Cafe in Hout Bay and become your own artist. They have a huge variety of unfired pottery pieces from which you can choose your favorite items and then the fun can already begin!

This is how it works: Choose from a wide array of pottery pieces and a wide selection of colourful paints and tools to create your personal and unique crockery. And by the way, you can actually use everything you make at home because once fired, all items are dishwasher proof, microwave proof and oven proof. And then indulge in the relaxation of painting. It’s pure bliss and so much fun for young and old. The only downside is that you cannot take your artwork home immediately. You’ll have to leave it there so that it can be fired. But no worries, you can pick it up a few weeks later and they keep you up to date when your items are ready for collection so that you don’t miss it!

Big plus: while you’re “working” you can also enjoy a pretty amazing breakfast or lunch there. We sometimes even just go there for the food experience without painting anything because it really tastes amazing and the kids can play outside at the various play stations. The huge garden features jumping castles, tree swings, slides, trampolines, a sand pit and a little “river” which is perfect on those extremely hot days. The kids can walk through the water and cool off their feet.

They’re open 7 days a week from 9am – 5pm and you simply pay a R40 studio fee plus the value of your selected items. They also have a new location in town on Bree Street. Check it out, we haven’t been there yet as we simply love the venue in Hout Bay. Get some impressions from their own image gallery here: Clay Cafe Gallery

Our Experience

We love this place. Full stop. The kids can become creative, enjoy picking their favourite pottery pieces and we already have a vast collection of colourful items at home to display around the house. It’s always a fun day out where we combine painting, eating and playing all at one place. And we cannot recommend the food enough. It’s surprisingly delicious and really worth a visit even if you don’t want to paint anything as yet.
