Damhuis Restaurant / Melkbosstrand

The Damhuis Building at the beach front of Melkbosstrand has a long history that dates back more than 200 years ago. Today, it has been declared as a South African National Monument and you can enjoy the delicious food and rich history when visiting the place just 25 minutes outside the city. It’s a family-friendly restaurant and your kids will be amazed with the awesome playground in the outside area.

The Damhuis Restaurant, housed in one of the oldest buildings in the Western Cape, serves seafood and traditional South African cuisine in a unique setting that has a rich heritage and boasts views of iconic Table Mountain and Robben Island.

To avoid disappointment, it’s advisable to book a slot in advance. The place is quite popular and fills up quickly, so rather make a reservation in order to enjoy the hospitality. You can easily book a table online: ONLINE RESERVATION

The restaurant features a diverse menu designed by executive chef Stèfan Meintjes. You’ll find exquisite dishes on the menu ranging from Oysters, Mussels, Calamari and traditional seafood to Meat and Poultry dishes. They also serve an extensive kiddies menu with the classics. You can find an overview of their breakfast, lunch and dinner menus here: MENU

The best part for the kids: the huge sanded play area inside the restaurant. Bring along those sand toys and let the little ones dig and play during your stay. There is also a fun lighthouse shaped tower with a spiral slide and a pirate boat right next to it. On weekends, the Damhuis also has a child minder on site so that the parents can sit back and relax knowing that the little ones are being looked after.

Our Experience

We’ve visited the restaurant three times by now and the kids always had a great time playing in the sand and climbing the lighthouse tower. So they were always covered and we could easily watch them from where we were seated. The playground is in close proximity to all tables (even inside) which is a big plus when you go there with smaller children.

However, we never were really impressed with the food. To be fair, we have to say that we don’t like to eat fish (and it happens to be mainly a fish restaurant). We usually ordered meat or poultry and that was only average in our experience. We cannot judge the seafood dishes and it might be a completely different experience.
