De Waal Park / Gardens

This is a lovely green park in the heart of Gardens and especially famous among the dog owners in town. They can bring along the furry friends and let them play freely on the green lawns and among those beautiful, old trees. You can enter the park from various entry points and make your way towards the playground in the center.

There, you’ll find high slides, jungle gyms, swings (also baby swings for the little ones), a carousel and a shaded seating area to bring along a picnic or snacks. This spot is mostly taken by parents who organise a birthday party in summer, but there are other benches around the playground, so you surely find a spot to relax and enjoy the beautiful view of Table Mountain and Lion’s Head.

Our Experience

This place is primarily for dogs. So if you or your kids are afraid of dogs who are running and playing around off the leash, then this is not for you. For all other parents out there, it’s definitely worth a visit as your kids can play at the playground, cool off at the fountain in summer or take their bikes and cycle around the park. It’s also a great picnic spot and many people even set up for a kiddies birthday party there. The only thing that’s kind of annoying is the amount of dog poo all over the place. I mean, it’s a dog park, but it would be great if the dog owners would just pick up the poo instead of leaving it on the lawns everywhere. You really have to navigate through the park hoping that none of the children steps into Nr.2.
