Just 3km outside Montagu, we found a peaceful escape at Doringlaagte Camping & Chalets – perfect for bringing along family and friends!
We camped right by the lake in a beautiful setting, with the stars lighting up the night sky and a chorus of frogs serenading us (bring earplugs if nature’s sounds aren’t your lullaby).
The campsite itself is great for families who love the outdoors, with a beach area featuring a sandy lake, sunbeds to chill on, and water slides for the kids. There’s also a bar with a heated pool for adults and a separate heated pool for the little ones (in summer only) – although it was quiet during our stay.
Every camping spot comes with a raised braai drum, but don’t forget to bring your own braai grid. Electricity is available at selected power points, so it’s recommended to bring a long extension cord. There’s also a cozy boma near reception for gathering around the fire.
The kids had fun trying out the paddle boats, canoes, and kayaks (bring your own life jackets!) and exploring the play area, which could use a bit of love (that trampoline needs a fix!). If you’re into fishing, they’ve got a catch-and-release policy (though you’ll need to bring your own rods and bait). There are also hiking and mountain biking trails, a mashie golf course, and 4×4 routes for the adventurous. You can see all activities here: ACTIVITIES
For those who prefer a little more comfort, there are self-catering chalets and glamping options too. You can check all accommodation options here: ACCOMMODATION
Good to know: This is a cash-only establishment, and everything (except accommodation) needs to be paid for in cash. No day visitors are allowed, and while the campsite isn’t dog-friendly per se, exceptions can be made for yorkies and smaller dogs (with prior approval). There’s also a no-music policy and strict quiet hours after 10pm, making it a peaceful spot to truly unwind.
Overall, it’s a great spot for outdoor-loving families. It was super peaceful when we visited (we were almost the only ones there!), but I can imagine it being more lively during the weekend or summer. If you’re looking for a serene escape in the middle of nature, this place definitely delivers.
