09sepAll Day15 SANParks’ Annual National Parks Week

Event Details

Enjoy free access to some of South Africa’s most iconic national parks during National Parks Week from September 9-13, 2024 (and with some extensions until the 15th of September)! In and around Cape Town, families can explore these beautiful natural areas without paying an entrance fee:

Table Mountain National Park
While Boulders Beach and the Table Mountain Cableway are not included in the free entry, there’s still plenty to discover:

  • Cape of Good Hope: Take a family hike through this historic and scenic area, and snap a memorable photo at the famous Cape of Good Hope sign—the southwesternmost point of Africa! Keep an eye out for wildlife like ostriches, baboons, and dassies as you explore the rugged cliffs, Diaz Beach (note: no swimming due to strong currents), and the iconic lighthouse.
  • Newlands Picnic Area: Perfect for a relaxed family picnic, this spot offers a peaceful setting where kids can play and explore while you unwind in nature.
  • Oudekraal: Nestled along the Atlantic coast, Oudekraal is an excellent choice for a beach day. Enjoy a picnic by the sea, with kids paddling in the calm waters. You might even spot dassies or southern right whales during migration season.
  • Silvermine: A fantastic spot for a family hike, the Silvermine Reservoir offers a refreshing swim in mountain waters. Plenty of picnic areas make this a great place to spend a whole day outdoors.
  • Tokai Picnic & Braai Area: Ideal for families who love a good braai, this spacious area allows you to cook up a feast while the kids enjoy the open space.

West Coast National Park Just a 70-minute drive from Cape Town, this park features the stunning Langebaan Lagoon, perfect for kayaking, kitesurfing, and birdwatching. Visit in September to see the famous wildflower displays. Look out for wildlife like eland, zebra, flamingos, and ostriches.

Note: Free entry is available from September 9 to 13, 2024, but not on the weekend.

Agulhas National Park Travel a bit further to explore the southernmost tip of Africa, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. This day trip offers a mix of history and nature, with chances to spot bontebok, grey rhebok, and diverse birdlife in this unique environment.

Important to know

  • The free entry is available to all South African citizens and residents with a valid ID.
  • While most activities are free, some services like guided tours and access to specific areas within the parks might still incur a fee.
