A monstrous mountain of trash is hungry for moreāand it has its sights set on world domination. But a proud captain, a stubborn lighthouse, and three quick-thinking performers stand in its way.
This April, Cape Townās youngest eco-warriors are invited to dive into Turn the Tide, a high-energy, waste-puppet childrenās play that transforms ocean plastic into puppetry, music, and mischief.
Set far from any coast, in the swirling heart of the North Pacific Ocean, the play follows the Great Pacific Garbage Patchāor simply, Giepieāa colossal, shape-shifting mass of marine debris with an insatiable appetite for litter. As Giepie dreams of engulfing the planet, the boastful Captain Herbert Hubris steers his gar-barge of Very Important Plastics straight into trouble. What happens when a lighthouse refuses to move? And what will it take to turn the tide?
Written and directed by Meg van Wyk, Turn the Tide uses puppetry, clowning, and acapella vocals to bring its watery world to life. Every element of the production carries its message: puppets are crafted from recycled materials collected during beach clean-ups; props incorporate micro-plastics gathered from Cape Town shores; and costumes are thrifted and upcycled, weaving ocean-inspired aesthetics into every stitch.
āTurn the Tide was born out of a growing concern for the impact of single-use plastics on our environment, and what kind of world weāll be leaving for future generations,ā says van Wyk. āMy aim is to make the idea of taking care of our worldāparticularly our oceansāa fun and possible thing for our children.ā
Van Wyk, founder of Limelight Studios, brings extensive experience in childrenās theatre and youth performance to this premiere production. Turn the Tide is the inaugural project for the production house and has been made possible through the support of the National Arts Council, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, and the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme.
