Exploring Tygerberg Nature Reserve in the Northern Suburbs

In the northern suburbs of Cape Town lies a little gem of nature waiting to be explored. The Tygerberg Nature Reserve is one of those places that makes you forget you’re so close to the city. Until you look up and see beautiful views of Table Mountain, Robben Island, and even False Bay on a clear day.

The reserve covers about 300 hectares and was set aside to protect one of the rarest types of vegetation in the Cape — Swartland Shale Renosterveld. This is a mouthful, but essentially it’s a critically endangered ecosystem, and Tygerberg is one of the last places where you can still see it thriving.

Over 500 plant species grow here (some you won’t find anywhere else in the world), and it’s also home to a variety of wildlife: more than 130 bird species, small mammals, reptiles, frogs, and of course plenty of insects and butterflies. If you enjoy spotting wildlife or just walking through natural fynbos, this is the place to be.

Hiking & Walking Trails

There are around 13 km of trails criss-crossing the reserve, and you can choose depending on your mood and fitness level:

  • Duiker Trail – a short and easy loop, great if you’re visiting with kids.
  • Golden Mole Trail – slightly more challenging, with rewarding views.
  • Ukhetshe Trail – one of the longer options for a proper morning hike.
  • A wheelchair-friendly trail near the picnic site makes sure no one misses out on the views.

The paths are well-marked, so you can even combine a few trails to create your own loop. Just bring decent shoes — it can get slippery after rain.

Panoramic Views & Picnics

One of the highlights of Tygerberg is the 360-degree panorama from the top. You can see almost the whole city laid out below you: Table Mountain, the Cape Flats, False Bay, and on a really clear day, Robben Island. It’s one of the best viewpoints in Cape Town without having to tackle a mountain mission.

If you bring along some snacks, you can even enjoy a picnic there. The picnic area is located near the entrance in Welgemoed including tables (some designed for wheelchair users). It’s the perfect spot to take a break after your hike, enjoy a snack, and let the kids run around.
