The reserve is named after its first European owner, Roelof Oloffse (whose nickname “Groot Vader” translates to “Great Father”). Grootvadersbosch is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Cape Floral Region and boasts an impressive array of plant species, birdlife, and wildlife, including rare creatures like the Cape leopard and the forest-dwelling red duiker.

4. Scolopia Cabin
Scolopia is a newly renovated 2-bedroom wooden cottage, which comfortably sleeps four guests. Both bedrooms are furnished with double beds, and the main bedroom is ensuite. It is located 500m from the reserve entrance on the edge of the indigenous forest and near the start of a day hike.

Things Good To Know
- Pets are not allowed at the Reserve.
- You can only use Eco Logs or Charcoal for braaing and making a fire.
- Day Visitor Permits can be purchased at CapeNature.
- You will reach the Nature Reserve via a gravel road.
- You can download a campsite map, hiking map and cabins layout.
- There are baboons and snakes in the area. So keep your belongings safe and don’t leave any food unattended.
- Office hours are from 7am to 4pm daily.
- Gate times are 7am to 6pm daily.
- The tap water is naturally brown and not polluted; however, it is advisable to boil it before drinking.
- Card Facilities are available dependent on signal. Cash is accepted.
