Discover a new Gem in Swellendam: Hidden Dragon Magic Garden

Tucked away in the charming town of Swellendam lies a place where fantasy meets nature — the Hidden Dragon Magic Garden. This enchanting space invites families to step into a world of imagination, where every turn reveals something mysterious, beautiful, and a little bit magical.

Created by local artist Celeste Coetzee, the garden took seven years to bring to life — and it shows. Guided tours lead you along winding paths filled with quirky sculptures, hidden creatures, and playful surprises that spark the imagination of kids and adults alike. Celeste’s storytelling weaves each element together, turning a simple garden walk into a full-blown fairy-tale experience.

Prices and Schedule

Tours run on weekends, during school holidays, and most public holidays, with sessions starting at 11 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm. Each visit lasts about an hour to 90 minutes — just enough time to explore, laugh, and let your imagination run wild. Babies in strollers join for free, and booking ahead is recommended since groups are kept small to preserve the sense of intimacy and discovery. Tickets for adults and children are available for R100 per person. Please note that this is a guided tour and visitors won’t be able to stroll along the garden on their own. If you’re planning a day trip, Swellendam offers plenty of lovely spots for lunch, coffee, and exploring afterward — making Hidden Dragon the perfect centrepiece for a family outing.

Accommodation: Stay the Night and Make It a Mini Getaway

If you’d like to turn your visit into a mini-break rather than just a day trip, the on-site guest accommodation at Hidden Dragon (the “Sleeping Beauty Guest Rooms”) offers a comfortable and magical overnight experience. Each room sleeps two guests, with options such as a Twin Room (two single beds) or a Double Room (one double bed) — all featuring private kitchenettes, private bathrooms, garden or terrace access, barbecue facilities and free WiFi.

Do keep in mind though: the accommodation does not automatically include access to the magic trail — you’ll need to book that separately. The guest rooms are on the top floor of a double-storey building and are accessible only via stairs, so if someone in your group has mobility concerns it’s worth contacting Hidden Dragon in advance.

Staying overnight means you can enjoy the magical venue in a more relaxed way: perhaps arrive a little earlier, linger after your tour with a riverside stroll or terrace BBQ, and wake up to the garden atmosphere already around you.
