Iziko South African Museum / Gardens

The South African Museum already has a long history. It was founded in 1825 and is located in the beautiful Company’s Garden in the heart of the city centre. You can probably imagine that since its opening almost 200 years ago, millions of visitors have admired the vast historical collection ranging from fossils to ancient insects and historical tools. Learn more about 700-million year old fossils and insects and look at tools that were handcrafted by our ancestors some 120,000 years ago.

The Iziko South African Museum is home to over one-and-a-half million specimens of scientific importance. Not all of them are on display in the Exhibitions, of course. Most of the items are carefully stored away so that the scientists at the Museum are able to study these collections and gain new insights about the earth and its biological and cultural diversity, past and present.

It’s a fascinating place to visit for young and old and there is so much to discover that it’s surely a fun place to go to for children of all ages.

Our Experience

Our son loves this museum. What about your kids? Children who like dinosaurs and fossils will be quite impressed by the Iziko Museum and the variety of things it has on display. The most interesting part for our son (6 years old) are the skeletons, the dinosaurs and other stuffed animals. He also likes to visit our ancestors who are staring right back at him.

We haven’t managed to read any information cards to him, yet. Neither is he interested how tools were made 120,000 years ago. Most of the time, we simply walk through the museum and follow his lead. It’s entertaining all the way. The entrance fee is cheap enough to do that and it keeps him busy for an hour or two. We love to go there especially on rainy days as it is a fun indoor activity for the kids and a great way to escape a cold day.
