Koelenhof Winery / Stellenbosch

Let’s start this one with a couple of facts: The Koelenhof Winery was established in 1941 and received top honours as South Africa’s Best Value Cellar Overall in WINE Magazine’s Best Value Wine Guide. Koelenhof presses an impressive 16,000 tons of grapes every year and is owned by a whopping amount of 70 local shareholders.

The venue is basically divided into two parts: the wine cellar and the picnic area which also features a massive playground for the little ones.

In the wine cellar, you can choose from a couple of wine tasting options and snacks for the table. Their options include a sorbet and ice cream pairing, a chocolate pairing, bubbly tasting as well as a kiddies tasting menu.

When you prefer a more special experience, Koelenhof is also an amazing spot to indulge in a picnic. All you have to do is bring yourselves, a blanket and the special people in your life and spend some quality time at Koelenhof over a picnic. They offer two different picnic basket options which can be pre-booked on their website: PICNICS

The best part for families: the huge kiddies play area on a big lawn with lots of big trees that offer shade. While the adults can sit down and relax on the wooden tables and enjoy another bottle of wine or a few snacks from the self-service shop, the children can explore the jungle gym and amazing playground. They will find anything a child usually loves: swings, slides, a bike track, trampoline, climbing features…

You can certainly spend a couple of hours there without getting bored. Just notice that the playground is NOT for free. They do charge a small entrance fee of R40 per child to enter the facilities.

Our Experience

On the first sight, the location doesn’t appear that great and we didn’t really like the atmosphere in the tasting room itself. BUT the tasting experience was absolutely amazing and the pairing options are delicious. The children shared a full kiddies tasting and were busy colouring their tasting sheets. The play area outside is amazing and there are lots of things to explore. The only little downside was the entrance fee for the kids. They charge R40 to enter the playground, but at least you can order more drinks from the self-service shop and watch them play from a safe distance.

Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
