McBains – A Peaceful Mountain Escape on the Bainskloof Pass

If you’re looking for a nature break from Cape Town’s busy energy, McBains is one of those places that instantly slows you down. It’s tucked right at the top of the Bainskloof Pass, about 90 minutes from the city, and surrounded by mountains, fresh air, and the peaceful sound of a river flowing below. The moment you arrive, you feel like you’ve stepped into a calmer world.

A Simple, Warm and Natural Stay

McBains is made up of rustic wooden cabins and lodge-style accommodation, all designed in a simple, natural way. It’s not luxury, and that’s the point. The spaces are clean, comfortable and welcoming, with a relaxed mountain atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where you sit barefoot on a deck chair, sip your coffee slowly, and watch the morning light move across the peaks.

The accommodation options vary in size and price. Smaller rooms start from around R790 per night, while most two-person rooms fall between R1,000 and R1,300 per night. Larger cabins for families or groups range between R1,500 and R1,600, depending on season and availability. Prices can shift throughout the year, so it’s a good idea to double-check based on your dates, but generally McBains is a very affordable mountain getaway—especially considering the surroundings.

Everything here is self-catering, so you bring your own food, snacks and drinks. The communal kitchen, lounges and outdoor spaces make it easy to cook together or enjoy long evenings by the fire. Some units share bathrooms, and a few cabins have private setups, so it’s worth checking the details before you book.

Nature on Your Doorstep

One of the best parts of McBains is how close you are to nature. A short wander down from the cabins takes you straight to the river, where you’ll find beautiful rock pools that feel like your own natural swimming spot. Even in summer the water stays fresh and cool, and it’s perfect for a quick dip on a hot day.

Hiking is a big highlight here. Trails lead straight from the property into the mountains. One of the most popular walks is the path into Happy Valley, which offers gentle paths, flowing water and shaded spots for a rest or picnic. The entire reserve around the Bainskloof Pass is incredibly scenic, and even a short walk gives you breathtaking views.

Back at the lodge, you can relax in the wood-fired hot tub, curl up in one of the communal lounges, or simply spend time on the deck watching clouds move over the mountain ridge. Evenings are peaceful, and if you look up, the stars are bright thanks to the minimal light pollution up in the pass.

A Great Option For Families And Groups

McBains works well for families who enjoy the outdoors. Kids can explore the paths, dip in the river or spend time playing around the cabins. There’s plenty of open space and a relaxed atmosphere, which always makes family trips easier. Because some areas are rocky and close to water, parents should keep an eye on little ones, but older kids tend to love the freedom. Please note: I would not recommend taking younger kids/toddlers down to the rock pool. The walk to the river is quite steep and there is minimal space around the rock pool to sit down. It is more suitable for older children.

Groups of friends also enjoy the space. The shared kitchen, the braai areas and the hot tub make it easy to hang out together. In the evenings, the lodge often feels like a big communal mountain house where everyone talks, cooks and winds down from the day.

McBains simple, honest and full of character. The cabins are cosy, the setting is peaceful and the mountain surroundings make it feel far away from everything—yet it’s close enough to Cape Town for a quick weekend break.

If you want a place to reset, reconnect with nature or simply enjoy a slow, quiet escape, McBains is a wonderful choice. It offers comfort without fuss, beauty without effort and the kind of calm that’s hard to find in everyday life.
