If your children are fascinated by stars, planets, space, or simply love discovering how the world works, July is the perfect time to visit the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) in Cape Town. As part of South Africa’s National Science Month celebrations, the observatory is offering a range of exciting experiences for curious minds of all ages, including special FREE guided tours.
National Science Month is a nationwide initiative that celebrates science, technology and innovation, encouraging South Africans to explore how science shapes our everyday lives and our future. This year, families have a unique opportunity to experience one of the country’s most important scientific institutions firsthand.
FREE National Science Month Day Tours
In support of National Science Month, the NRF-SAAO will host a series of FREE guided day tours from 27 to 31 July 2026, with each tour taking place from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the science, history and innovation behind Africa’s leading optical and infrared astronomy facility.
During the guided experience, guests will visit:
- The historic Main Building
- The Visitor Centre
- The iconic McClean Telescope
The tours offer fascinating insights into astronomy in South Africa, the history of the observatory, and the scientific discoveries that continue to shape our understanding of the Universe.

For those wanting to experience the observatory after dark, the SAAO also offers several evening experiences throughout July. Tickets cost R50 for adults. Kids under 6 enter for free.
Open Nights
The popular Open Nights take place on:

These evenings begin with an engaging presentation on astronomy or a related scientific topic, followed by a guided tour of the observatory grounds, including the museum, library and the historic 120-year-old McClean Telescope.
Night Tours and Stargazing

These tours begin at the Visitor Centre and introduce guests to the rich history of astronomy in South Africa before exploring the observatory campus and observing the night sky. Tickets cost R50 for adults. Kids under 6 enter for free.
