If you’re planning to travel internationally to or from South Africa, there’s an important new requirement you need to know about.
As of 1 July 2026, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) requires most travellers entering or leaving South Africa to submit an online traveller declaration before they travel. The new system is part of SARS’ efforts to modernise customs procedures and replace traditional paper declaration forms.
What Has Changed?
Previously, travellers often completed customs declarations using paper forms at airports and border posts. Under the new regulations, declarations must now generally be submitted electronically using the South African Traveller Management System (SATMS) before you begin your journey.
The declaration process applies to travel by:

The aim is to speed up border processing while improving the monitoring of goods, cash, and other items entering and leaving the country.
Who Needs to Complete the Declaration?
The new requirement applies to:

- Business travellers
- Families travelling with children
Parents or guardians must complete declarations on behalf of children and infants travelling with them.
One notable exception applies to certain transit passengers who remain within designated international transit areas and do not formally enter South Africa.
When Must You Submit Your Declaration?
Travellers must submit their online declaration within 24 hours before departure. If any of your travel details change after submitting the declaration, you are required to update your information before travelling.
What Information Will You Need?
The online declaration requests information including:
- Personal and passport details
- Travel itinerary information
- Details of goods being imported or exported
- Currency and bearer instruments above applicable thresholds
- Restricted or prohibited items
- Commercial goods
- Temporary imports or exports
Additional information may be required if you are carrying goods that exceed duty-free allowances or other declarable items.
What Happens If You Forget?
The good news is that forgetting to complete the declaration in advance does not automatically prevent you from travelling.
SARS has indicated that assistance will be available at ports of entry, including self-service facilities where available. However, travellers are encouraged to complete their declarations online beforehand to avoid delays.
Why Is SARS Introducing This System?
The new South African Traveller Management System (SATMS) forms part of a broader customs modernisation programme aimed at:
- Reducing paperwork
- Improving border efficiency
- Strengthening customs compliance
- Better monitoring of goods and currency movements
- Aligning South Africa with international customs practices
