Beta Beach in Bakoven is a beautiful, sheltered beach tucked between large granite boulders, making it a peaceful spot for families to enjoy the Cape Town coastline. With stunning views of the Twelve Apostles and Lion’s Head, it’s a lovely place for swimming, relaxing and a day by the sea.
Our Take
This beach is known as Beta Beach among the locals although Google refers to it as “Bakoven Beach” because of its location in the suburb of Bakoven. It’s a rather small beach, but not very well known among tourists, so it’s less crowded and a special place for the locals. You still have to come early though in order to secure a nice sunbathing spot and finding parking close-by.
After a short walk down the stairway, you will find beautiful sunset views, massive boulder rocks, a quiet spot for sunbathing and a great place for swimming. Although small, the beach is also home to the National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI) oldest station, established in 1967.
Cute little bungalows line up the shore and help to create a picturesque scenery. Together with the bungalows at Clifton and Glen Beach, Beta Beach has been declared a heritage area.

This is one of our favourite beaches since it offers you a little bit of everything. You have a small grassy strip, sand for the kids to play in, the water is shallow and protected from the waves. So it’s a perfect swimming location. You have rocks that protect you from the wind and where the kids can climb onto. Little streams in between the rocks are perfect for playing, too! And you can go on a search for beautiful seashells and other beach findings. We simply love it there.
