Bluebird Café on the R44 near Stellenbosch is a relaxed family-friendly stop offering good food, coffee and a welcoming atmosphere. It’s a great place to take a break while exploring the Stellenbosch Winelands with kids.
Our Take
The Bluebird Cafe along R44 is a cute and casual restaurant for the entire family. You will be greeted by an airy establishment with beautiful views, vintage interior and lots of space to play for the kids. While they have a delicious dessert selection at hand, you can also enjoy your breakfast and lunch there. Alongside the regular menu, they also have daily specials written on boards. So it’s always a little surprise what’s on for the day, but this makes it even more exciting to go there more than once.
In season, they also sell fresh farm produce like strawberries and other goodies from their little display. So while the adults can sit back and relax, the kids can roam around outside and make use of the generous playground with the typical jungle gym, swings and plenty of safe space to run around and play games.

While heading out to Stellenbosch, we took a little stop at Bluebird Cafe and haven’t been disappointed. Although it was a bit chilly on that day, the kids had a good time playing outside at the playground and chasing each other around the restaurant along the lush green grass. We took the table in front of the cozy fireplace and enjoyed a glass of wine along with some late lunch options. Our son was especially excited as they have a superb cake selection and he was allowed to have a delicious cheese cake all by himself. We definitely want to come back on a sunny day to enjoy the generous outside seating area as well.
