Camps Bay Beach is probably the most popular beach among tourists when they visit Cape Town in the summer months. However, locals appreciate it just as much and it’s a great spot for families, swimmers and sunbathers.

Camps Bay Beach stretches along the buzzing Camps Bay promenade with lots of trendy restaurants, ice cream parlours, local artists and beautiful people. It has a long stretch of white sand and plenty of space for all those sun lovers out there.

You can either bring your own beach gear or rent an umbrella and chairs for your convenience. So make sure to bring along some cash in case you want to make use of this service. Otherwise, the use of the beach is 100% free and everyone is welcome. There are also quite a few informal traders who sell refreshments and ice cream directly at the beach which comes in handy on those hot days!

The water in the Atlantic Ocean is cold. Don’t expect long swimming sessions in the water if you’re not equipped with a wetsuit. The water temperature is around 14 degrees and only surfers and children manage to spend an awful long time in there.

Waves can get quite high, too! Although it’s safe for swimming, always keep an eye on the little ones and don’t let them swim out too far. The currents are relatively strong and you don’t want to get lost in the middle of the ocean. There are lifeguards on duty during the summer months, but if you’re looking for a safer spot for you and the children, check out the different tidal pools in Cape Town. Camps Bay Tidal Pool is directly located at the end of Camps Bay Beach with a playground right next to it.

From the beach itself you have spectacular views of Lion’s Head, the Twelve Apostles and the Atlantic Ocean. It’s also a famous spot for sundowners as you can conveniently hop into one of the bars at the promenade and enjoy a few cocktails while the sun dips into the ocean.

Please be aware that parking is rather limited and you might have to cruise around for some time before you find a spot. But it’s certainly not impossible and we’ll always find some parking in the parallel streets behind Main Road.

During the summer months, you might be able to witness international beach volleyball tournaments at the beach or take part in the popular Summer Beach festival. Just a word of warning: on a windy day, you get a free sand peeling at this beach as there is very little protection from the wind and it can blow right into the sandy beach. You’re also able to bring along your furry friend. Dogs are allowed off the leash and can enjoy those long beach walks, too!
