If you haven’t watched a movie under open skies yet, you should definitely give it a try. Galileo Open-Air Cinema collaborates with amazing venues in and around Cape Town to screen classic, romantic, funny and family-friendly movies between October and April every year.

How it works? You check out their movie schedule online, see what you like and at what venue it’s playing, book tickets and then enjoy a night out with family and friends. Easy! Although the movies usually start around 19:30 and 20:30 (depending on sunset), it’s wise to arrive early and as soon as the gates open in order to secure the best spot on the lawn. Doors open at 18:00 on Weekdays and 17:00 on Saturdays Winelands shows.

As there are food trucks and little bars on site, you can make it a fun afternoon and even bring along your own picnic basket if you want to. But you can pop in there completely unprepared as a variety of local food vendors will take care of your taste buds by serving mouth-watering pizzas, juicy burgers, tasty wraps, delicious popcorn and other yummy snacks. Vegetarian and Halal options are also available as well as coffee, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Just make sure not to be late as the gates will close 15 minutes after the start of the movie.

You are probably wondering what happens to your tickets in the case of bad weather (strong wind and heavy rain) and the show must be cancelled. If that is the case, you will receive an sms or email informing you about the cancellation and you can simply refund your ticket. Just don’t delay it as no refunds are issued after 7 days of the cancelled show. When there is only a light drizzle, the movie will play as per schedule and you need to make sure to dress and prepare accordingly.

Unfortunately, it’s not allowed to bring along your own chairs nor your furry friend. Dogs are not allowed during the shows.

Birthday Special

If your birthday falls in any month between October and May, you can get a FREE movie ticket, blanket and backrest in your birthday month! To take advantage of this gift, you must book your free birthday ticket on webtickets! Just make sure that your entourage books their tickets in advance in order to avoid disappointment at the door. If you would like to surprise someone for their birthday, you can even add a personal message on the Galileo screen for them. You must fill out the form in order to let them know about your special arrangements and then they make sure that the surprise will be perfect.
