World of Birds in Hout Bay is Africa’s largest bird park, home to hundreds of birds and a variety of other animals. With walk-through aviaries and close-up encounters, it’s a fascinating and fun outing for families and animal-loving kids.
Our Take
Visit the Wildlife Sanctuary and Monkey Park any time (no bookings required) and enjoy a large variety of birds, monkeys, mammals and reptiles. This place is the largest bird park in Africa and holds a huge amount of different species. World of Birds is open 365 days of the year and totally enjoyable for young and old.
Besides all the interesting birds, the biggest highlight for the kids is probably their Monkey Jungle. 38 agile and highly inquisitive New World monkeys live in a large walkthrough enclosure, which allows visitors to enjoy direct contact with them. Make sure to be at the park when the Monkey Jungle is open for visitors between 11:30 – 13:00 and 14:00 – 15:30.
Other mammals and reptiles include baboons, foxes, racoons, guineapigs, porcupines, tortoises, iguanas, skinks and terrapins. Find a list of all their animals here: ANIMALS
Here are some feeding times in case you don’t want to miss out on the fun. Feeding Times are:
- Penguins: 11:30 & 15:30
- Pelicans: 12:30
- Cormorants: 13:30
- Birds of Prey: 16:15
When the younger kids get tired of walking, you’ll also find a toddler playground and sandpit there to keep them entertained and busy. The playground features small slides, a swing and small play houses. Children’s pushcarts are available for hire at R20 each.
You can stop for a snack or coffee at the Hornbill Cafe which offers drinks and snacks as well as light meals. You can also bring your own picnic basket and enjoy a picnic at the Flamingo Terrace right next to the Flamingoes.
On your way out, you’ll also find a cute little souvenir shop with loads of things to buy to remember this day at World of Birds.

The smaller the kids, the faster they run through the park 🙂 I think it’s more impressive to kids starting at the age of 3 to fully enjoy the different animals and really appreciate them. But even when our kids were younger they loved to go to World of Birds especially for the monkey experience. It is so much fun to walk among them and watch them. They are naughty little creatures and try to steel whatever they can. So make sure to keep your belongings outside and then say Hi to the monkeys. Our kids always enjoy the mammals and reptiles more than the birds, but of course this depends on the different interests. Overall it is a great park and super fun entertainment for the kids.
