Scratch Patch & Cave Golf / Waterfront + Simon’s Town

Girls just want diamonds. And boys maybe too.

Scratch Patch

Take your kids back to the roots at one of the two scratch patch venues in and around Cape Town. The one is conveniently located at the V&A Waterfront while the other one (and slightly bigger one) is out in Simon’s Town.

Let your children enter a world full of minerals with thousands and thousands of colourful stones to collect and dig for. It’s really fun for young and old while sitting down in the scratch patch and searching for the prettiest stones all over the place. Depending on the stamina of your child, this can be a time consuming activity and lots of fun at the same time.

There are a wide variety of tumble-polished gemstones in the Scratch Patch, mostly popular Southern African stones such as Tiger’s Eye, Rose Quartz, Amethyst, Jasper, Agates and Crystals. If you’re lucky, you might find virtually anything including Lapis Lazuli, Blue Lace Agate and some really exotic stones!

It’s an inexpensive visit and popular with all ages – and being surrounded by so many colourful stones is a memorable and uplifting experience. More and more “mainstream” people are starting to believe that gemstones have “powers” – and being surrounded by so many beautiful polished gemstones certainly does have a calming effect on many people – and especially children!

You can choose from 3 different bag sizes or a cup and fill it up to the top with your favourite gemstones.

  • Small bag: R30 (contains approx. 140g)
  • Medium bag: R45 (contains approx. 300g)
  • Large bag: R140 (contains approx. 1200g)
  • Cup: R90 (contains approx. 630g)

Cave Golf

When you’re done collecting your treasures, you can end of your time at the Scratch Patch with a round of some cave mini golf.

This 18-hole mini-golf layout at the Waterfront is fun to play, and despite being relatively short and compact, it’s well-designed and challenging enough to be enjoyed even by regular golfers. It’s also indoors, so can be played and enjoyed in any weather!

The Simon’s Town Cave Golf layout is longer and more spacious. It also features an 18-hole course which meanders downwards from the back of the Scratch Patch and through a series of underground areas that feature rock walls, some highly imaginative cave and mine obstacles and ancient relics, an underground waterfall, and fabulous mineral displays. There’s even a section that is lit only by UV light, and each hole has been thoughtfully designed and constructed, and carefully finished to a very high standard.

A round of golf is R35 per player or R30 per player for groups of 10 people. No bookings are required.

At the Rock Shops you can also purchase unique and beautiful jewellery or gem stones and take something valuable home with you to remember.

Our Experience

We have visited both scratch patches and we slightly prefer the one in Simon’s Town as it is a little bit bigger and the golf course is more challenging than in town. But this is a personal preference, of course. When you’re looking for a cool activity on a rainy day in town, then the Waterfront venue is just perfect. We’re always taking a Cup and fill it up as much as we can. By now, we can have our own scratch patch at home because we’ve already collected so many stones from them 🙂
