It’s the kind of place where you sit barefoot on a deck chair, sip your coffee slowly, and watch the morning light move across the peaks.

The accommodation options vary in size and price. Smaller rooms start from around R790 per night, while most two-person rooms fall between R1,000 and R1,300 per night. Larger cabins for families or groups range between R1,500 and R1,600, depending on season and availability. Prices can shift throughout the year, so it’s a good idea to double-check based on your dates, but generally McBains is a very affordable mountain getaway—especially considering the surroundings.

Please note: I would not recommend taking younger kids/toddlers down to the rock pool. The walk to the river is quite steep and there is minimal space around the rock pool to sit down. It is more suitable for older children.

Groups of friends also enjoy the space. The shared kitchen, the braai areas and the hot tub make it easy to hang out together. In the evenings, the lodge often feels like a big communal mountain house where everyone talks, cooks and winds down from the day.
