Stony Point Nature Reserve / Betty’s Bay

If your kids love penguins as much as we do and you’ve been to Boulders Beach already, try this fabulous alternative in Betty’s Bay. The Stony Point Nature Reserve is also home to a unique colony of African Penguins.

You and the kids will get the chance to see these wonderful flightless birds up close, via the boardwalk through the colony, which allows the public to observe the penguins go about their daily activities in their natural habitat, without disturbing or disrupting them.

The conservation fee is really affordable and you can stay there as long as you want to enjoy the beautiful ocean views and watch the penguins (and other cute animals) in their natural environment.

There is also a communal restaurant just before the entrance to the boardwalk where you can get some ice cream for the kids or even sit down for a full meal if you’re hungry. The restaurant is open during the day and serves drinks and other refreshments. The public toilets are also located right next to the restaurant.

You are interested in penguins and would love to pass on some fun facts and knowledge to your kids? Then download the little booklet on their website with lots of interesting information about the penguins living there: PENGUIN BOOKLET

Our Experience

Whenever we drive out that direction, we stop at Betty’s Bay to watch the penguins there. It’s a huge colony and less crowded than Boulders Beach. It’s kind of a little secret and not too many tourists have heard of Betty’s Bay yet. So if you want to watch the birds almost by yourself, it’s worth to drive out there. The kids absolutely love it!
