Winelands Light Railway / Stellenbosch

Unlimited train rides in an amazing scenery.

If your kids love trains, then this is a Must-do on your entertainment list. Once you enter the massive areal of the Light Railway Park, your kids can enjoy endless green lawns, gigantic grass animals, and of course unlimited train rides the entire day! One train ride lasts approximately 7 minutes and takes you on a 760m journey within the train park (including some tunnel fun).

Jump onboard one of their trains at Park Station and experience a locally designed and built miniature railway. Steam trains will haul passengers between 11.00 – 15.00 on a Saturday and Sunday. The two electric engines, Dozer and Fritz, are running when the steam trains are off duty.

The lawns are super inviting for a picnic. So don’t forget to pack a picnic blanket and lots of yummy treats and sunscreen to last throughout the day. When the kids are tired of riding the train, they can play at the jungle gym and super cute sand pit which is shaded and equipped like a real little kitchen.

Alcohol or braais are not permitted but their kiosk is open every operating day and will provide you with a variety of snacks and refreshments to choose from including coffee, milkshakes and slushies. There is also a food truck, Aniseed, which can provide you with a selection of food items including hot dogs, burgers and chips on Saturdays, Sundays, and Public Holidays.

The park is open every weekend (Saturday and Sunday), long weekends and public holidays from 09:00 to 17:00. It’s also open daily during the public school holidays from 09:00 to 17:00. Weather dependent.

The entrance fee is R70 per person with access to the park & one complimentary train ride. If you want unlimited train rides for the kids, then it’s R120 per person. Tickets are sold directly at the entrance of the park. Card facilities are available. Tickets and train rides are non-transferable.

Our Experience

Our kids love love love this place so much that they would go every single weekend! Of course, this is more of a to-do in summer when the days are nice and warm and you can spend the entire day outside. But it’s absolutely fabulous and the train rides are really enjoyable, especially when the steam trains are running. Kids are absolutely fascinated by them. The park is massive, so you never feel crowded and you can get a nice mix of train rides, play time at the jungle gym and munching away some food and ice cream. They even sell little surprise bags for the kids in small brown bags. They are super cheap and it’s such a great treat for the kids! This certainly is one of our top recommendations!
