Best “Big 5 Safaris” With Kids Near Cape Town

When visiting South Africa, a Safari trip to see the Big 5 is almost compulsory! Get close to those beautiful wild animals and experience an unforgettable encounter with elephants, lions, giraffes, rhinos and many more African wildlife. However, flying to the famous Kruger National Park near Johannesburg in the north-east is not always feasible and often requires a bit more budget to reside in one of the game lodges situated in Kruger Park itself. So a safari near Cape Town is not only convenient, but also a relatively affordable alternative.

The good news is that there are quite a few Safari options in the rest of the country. You can find game lodges and nature parks only a few hours away from the most popular destination – Cape Town. Although there are no safaris in Cape Town directly, you don’t have to drive far to arrive at one of the Big 5 safari game reserves located near the Mother City.

When you’re travelling as a family with children, a lot of things are important to consider and it can be difficult to find the perfect game lodge that suits all your needs. But we’re here to help and list the best family-friendly safaris near Cape Town. Almost all of them are home to the Big 5 and completely malaria-free! So you can enjoy your game drive without any worries which is especially beneficial to families with younger children.

Buffelsfontain Safari Accommodation

The Nature Reserve offers a variety of accommodation options and something for every budget. So it’s up to you whether you prefer a real bush camping experience or favour a little more luxurious housing.

If you’re keen for a back to basic camping experience, you will enjoy their camp set up in the middle of the dunes where the only light at night will be the soothing fire place and the star-filled night sky. There are ablution blocks, running water and a hot shower (gas geyser) but that is where the luxury ends.

If you prefer the luxury of electricity, then we can recommend the self-catering chalets or the manor guest house which is most suitable for a big travel group. Both of those options offer a kitchen, a private bathroom as well as towels and linen and are perfect for those travelling on a budget.

For guests looking for a bit of comfort in the bush, we recommend the luxury cottages at Buffelsfontain. When booking these units there are 2 packages available, self-catering or full board. The full board option includes 3 meals and a fully guided game drive per person per nights stay.

Fairy Glen Private Game Reserve lies just a short distance from Cape Town in the Western Cape, nestled at the base of the renowned Brandwacht Mountains. This area boasts a diverse range of plant and animal life, with Cape fynbos flourishing in its natural beauty. Named after a sizable dragonfly found in the nearby mountain streams, this family-owned reserve also houses an African Khoisan Buchman Rock Art Heritage Site dating back approximately 6,000 years.

For those seeking an exclusive and personal safari experience, this reserve offers an ideal destination. Encounter lion, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros on every game drive, with all five members of the renowned Big Five present. Although sightings of the region’s free-roaming leopards are less common due to their elusive nature, visitors may also observe other species such as blue wildebeest, giraffe, eland, bontebok, zebra, oryx, klipspringer, nyala, and steenbok. Additionally, a variety of bird species, including the endangered black eagle (Aquila), can be spotted throughout the reserve.
