Blue Bird Garage Market / Muizenberg

Are you looking for a vibrant indoor market that caters for the needs of all generations? Then try the Blue Bird Garage Market on a Thursday or Friday evening and you won’t be disappointed.

The garage is actually an old postal plane hangar on the edge of Muizenberg and is now home to local artisans, specialty cooks, bakers, producers and designers. They are all under one roof and create a buzzing and vibrant atmosphere.

You’ll find various food stalls that serve all kinds of dishes ranging from steaks, burgers, falafels, salads, Portuguese prego rolls, edo wraps and sweet treats such as fudge, crepes, cupcakes, brownies and donuts.

At the Bicycle Bar you can grab some local wines, craft beer or even shots for those who don’t have to drive home.

If you’re in the mood for a little shopping tour, you will be happy to browse through the shopping section of the market. Leather bags, jewellery, clothing and body products are all on display and it’s really hard to resist. You simply have to take something precious home.

While the adults take a seat at one of the many long tables inside the market, the kids will find their own kiddies entertainment area with a huge jungle gym and various activities from face painting to sand art to keep them busy and fully entertained. There is also a special child minder on duty who makes sure that the children are all safe and happy during their play time. So you don’t have to worry about them at all!

Your furry friends are also welcome at the market, but you will have to keep them on a leash during your visit.

They also have a designated smoking area next to the bathrooms in the back for those who cannot do without one.

Our Experience

We usually go on a Thursday afternoon as it’s less busy than on a Friday and you always get a seat and there is plenty of space to walk around and check out the different food vendors and arts and crafts sellers. They have vegan and vegetarian options as well and serve anything from asian style food, burgers, samosas and sweet treats. The kids are quite happy to stay in the designated kids area with a large jungle gym, slide and monkey bars.

It is a little run down, but still safe to play and you sometimes have childminders on duty. We didn’t have to pay for the service although it says that playtime costs R20 per child. Maybe this only applies on a Friday? Not 100% sure on that one.
