Cape Town Ostrich Ranch / Philadelphia

Head over to this beautiful ostrich ranch to get very close to this special bird and learn all about them by an experienced tour guide. The tour starts at the museum where you’ll learn some quite informative facts and find answers to questions you never even knew you had.

Then, you’ll get a hands-on experience on how sturdy and strong an ostrich egg is. You will be able to stand on an egg and learn why it doesn’t break.

Depending on when you visit the farm, you might be able to see some babies or small teenagers. But the grown-ups are cute as hell, too! So grab a bag of ostrich food and get right into it. They will pick the food from your hands – or for the small kiddies hands – from a tablet.

The highlight of the tour is the ostrich ride. Well ok, you’re not really riding it but at least you can climb onto its back and get a nice picture of you with the bird. This will only work if you weigh not more than 90kg. So the kids can definitely hop on!

Fun fact: the Ostrich Ranch was also home to Tom Thumb. He held the official Guinness Book of Record for world’s smallest ostrich! But unfortunately, he passed away on the 17th of September 2018 and you can no longer visit him.

They also have a restaurant at the farm which serves delicious ostrich steak and burgers. Where else to try ostrich than fresh from the ranch? But don’t worry – it’s not all ostrich on the menu. They serve a kiddies menu as well along salads, pasta, chicken prego rolls and much more. Check out their menu: MENU

This is for the ladies: they have a pretty amazing shop right next to the restaurant where you’ll find handbags, wallets, ostrich eggs, feather dusters and many many more pretty things from the animal of the day. They also cater the for the little ones and hide a little scratch patch inside the shop where the children can dig out some pretty gem stones.

Kiddies Birthday Parties

Why not throw a kiddies birthday party at a rather unusual venue? The kids will be able to enjoy exotic animals, green lawns, a playground, in house catering and a fun day out and about.

You can enquire directly for any birthday party ideas with them and they try everything in their capacity to make them happen.

Our Experience

This was great fun for the kids as they were able to feed the ostriches and even sit on them for a bit and stroke their necks. This was a very cute and fun picture and surely a day to remember. When the tour is over, you can head over to the little petting zoo where you’ll find goats, turtles and other small mammals. And they have a playground, too! Only downside: there is very little shade and playing can be very exhausting on a very warm day.
