Get a chance to meet the tallest land mammals on earth at the Giraffe House not far from Cape Town City Centre. At The Giraffe House Wildlife Awareness centre you’ll get easy access to some of Africa’s wonderful wildlife and bird species.
The most popular team member is probably Gerry, the hand reared giraffe. Gerry and some other animal friends help visitors to get some important and interesting information about the wildlife conservation program. Education is their primary focus and there’s a lot to learn about these amazing species. The list of animals at the park is really extensive and you can show your kids not only the tallest land mammal (Gerry), but also the biggest bird (ostrich), the smallest antelope (the duiker) and biggest antelope (the eland).
Other animals include:
- Vervet Monkey
- Meerkat
- Eland
- Bontebok
- Giraffe
- Cape Grysbok
- Grey/Common Duiker
- Blue Duiker
- Springbok
- Impala
- Zebra
- Warthog
- Serval Cats
- Caracal
- Bat-Eared Fox
- Cape Fox
- Black Backed Jackal
- Farmyard animals
- South African Tortoises

- Red-billed Teal
- South African Ducks
- Spurwinged Goose
- African Starlings
They also do interactive creepy crawly encounters which are held at 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00 on weekends and during school holidays. It gives the visitor the opportunity to meet and hold some interesting creatures.
For the time in between, the kids can enjoy a nice play area which consists of three jungle gyms and a lawn area. Refreshments are available at a small kiosk, but you’re also allowed to bring your own picnic basket if you’re planning on spending an afternoon there. Just keep in mind that alcohol is prohibited on the premises.
Animal Feeding and Close Encounters with the Gentle Giants
Visitors have the unique opportunity to meet Gerry, a majestic giraffe who towers above the rest of the animals at an impressive 5.8 meters tall. What makes this experience extra special? You can hand-feed Gerry yourself! Our kids loved this interactive moment, and it’s a fantastic way to learn about giraffes‘ gentle nature, their long purple tongues, and their important role in the African ecosystem.
You get to feed them grapes, carrots and leaves while hearing a lot of interesting stories and facts about these giant gentles. Afterwards, another unique animal encounter is waiting for you. You also get up close with owls. They will fly up to you, sit on your hands (or shoulders) and you can gently stroke them and see them right in front of you.
Booking for this interactive experience must be made at least 48 hours in advance.
The experience is R750 for adults and R600 for children aged 5 to 17 years. The price includes the general entry to the park.

Kiddies Birthday Parties
They also arrange kiddies birthday parties at the Giraffe House. All parties are hosted under a 100 square metre thatched roof lapa with drop down sides. This is available for kiddies’ parties, functions and talks. Prior bookings are essential and all details and prices must be discussed directly.
For party enquiries you can contact giraffehouse@gmail.com
Our Experience
The kids and ourselves absolutely loved the experience at Giraffe House. The areal is huge and not only home to cute giraffes but a whole lot other animals as well. So it really feels like a little zoo and the kids were super exciting to explore all the different animals along the walkway. We also attended the reptile show where we learned many interesting things about snakes, frogs, spiders and other reptiles on the planet. It really is a hand-on experience and when you’re brave enough you can pet a snake or a lizard during the show.

Hello Lee-Ann, when we visited Giraffe House, we just rocked up there and bought the tickets at the door. So there is no need to make a booking in advance and you can go there any time. The shows are really cool, so maybe schedule your visit in a way that you can attend a show during your visit. Enjoy!
